Craig y Dorth Hillfort

You won't find much fanfare about Craig y Dorth, and that's rather the point. This Iron Age hillfort sits above Coleford in the Forest of Dean, a proper scramble up through woodland to reach the ramparts that once defended an ancient settlement. The views across the valley are the real draw - on a clear day you can see far enough to make the steep walk worthwhile.

It's an easy spot to miss if you're not looking for it, which means you'll likely have the place to yourself. The earthworks are still visible if you know what you're looking at - those raised banks and ditches tell the story of people who chose high ground for protection. Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will get more from it than casual walkers, though anyone after a proper leg-stretcher through the Dean will find it satisfying enough.

There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no charge. Just woodland, ancient ground, and the kind of quiet you rarely get. Allow an hour round trip from the car if you're taking it steady, less if you're fit. The approach is muddy in winter and bracken-choked come late summer, so spring or early autumn works best.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Greenacres, Bracelands, or Forest and Wye Valley - it makes a decent morning walk before heading into Coleford for lunch. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Forest of Dean rambling holiday.
