Puzzlewood

Walking into Puzzlewood is like stepping into a maze designed by someone with a wicked sense of humour. This woodland attraction near Coleford spans acres of ancient forest crisscrossed by narrow paths, sunken lanes, and dead ends that have been confusing visitors for decades. You're genuinely meant to get lost here - that's rather the point.

The woodland itself is the draw. Towering trees, moss-covered rocks, and those wonderfully disorienting pathways create an almost otherworldly feel. It's been used as a filming location multiple times, which tells you something about the atmospheric quality of the place. Children love it because there's actual jeopardy (mild jeopardy, but still) - you have to think about which way to go. Adults either find it charmingly bonkers or frustrating, depending on temperament.

Allow at least two hours, longer if you've got kids who want to explore every possible wrong turn. The terrain is woodland - muddy in wet weather, so proper footwear matters. It's free to wander, though parking arrangements and any facilities should be checked before you head over.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the nearby campsites - Whitemead Forest Park or Bracelands are both within easy reach - Puzzlewood works well as a half-day adventure. It's the sort of place that doesn't overstay its welcome but leaves you with proper memories of getting intentionally lost among the trees. The Forest of Dean location means you can easily combine it with longer walks or visits to other woodland spots in the area.
