Craig Ffynnon

The walk up Craig Ffynnon from Llanrwst is properly rewarding - a steep ascent through mixed woodland that opens onto exposed moorland with views across the Conwy Valley. It's not a long climb, but it's relentless enough that you'll feel you've earned the vantage point at the top.

The peak itself sits at around 600 metres and gives you sight lines across to the broader Snowdonia range on clear days. On the way up you pass through forest thick with moss and old stone walls; the final push takes you across open ground where the wind picks up and the valley spreads out below. Most people allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on pace and how long they linger at the top.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's straightforward enough for anyone with reasonable fitness, though the gradient means it's not ideal for very young children unless they're proper hill-goers. History types might find it interesting as a vantage point over the valley, but there's nothing in the way of structures or remains at the summit itself.

It's free to walk and accessible year-round, though winter can make the moorland section boggy and muddy. Spring and early autumn tend to offer the clearest views. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks around Llanrwst - Maenan Abbey or Erw Glas are both within easy striking distance - this makes a solid half-day excursion that won't eat up your whole holiday.
