Cowden Wood

The woodland around Cowden, just outside Crieff, is proper walking territory. Thick with scots pine and spruce, it's the sort of place where you can lose an hour without realizing - partly because the paths are decent and partly because there's something about these Perthshire forests that makes you slow down. The trees are tall enough to block out most of the sky, which means even on a bright day it feels cool and slightly mysterious in there.

Walkers will get the most from this. There's no visitor center, no interpretation boards, no faffing about - just a forest and your own pace. The ground underfoot is soft with needle fall, so it's relatively easy going, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet. Allow two hours if you're taking your time, less if you're just doing a loop.

For families with young kids, it depends on the temperament of your lot. If they'll happily trudge through woodland and spot the odd bird or squirrel, they'll be fine. If they need constant entertainment or facilities, it'll feel a bit thin. There's car parking nearby, but facilities are minimal.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Comrie - and several decent ones are within two miles - Cowden Wood works as a morning or evening walk that doesn't require driving anywhere ambitious. It won't blow your mind, but it's a solid addition to a Perthshire week rather than a standalone reason to visit.
