Cowage Wood

Walking into Cowage Wood near Calne feels like stepping back about fifty years. It's proper old-school woodland - the sort of place where you'll find gnarled oaks, dense undergrowth, and paths that aren't exactly manicured. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and on a damp day the whole thing drips with atmosphere. There's no visitor centre, no signage to speak of, and that's rather the point.

You're looking at a genuine working woodland here, not a theme-parked nature reserve. Bring decent boots and don't expect a circular route with benches. The main appeal is for walkers who actually want to walk, or anyone keen on native woodland plants and fungi - particularly impressive after rain. It's quiet enough that you might spot woodland birds, though you need patience and good ears. Kids who are past the 'I'm bored in five minutes' stage will enjoy the adventure of it, but toddlers and pram-pushers should look elsewhere.

Allow a couple of hours if you're serious about exploring, though you can do a quick forty-minute potter if time's tight. It's completely free, as these things usually are. The nearest proper facilities are in Calne itself, a few miles south.

If you're based at one of the caravan sites nearby - The Retreat Glamping, Roe Deer Fields, or Plough Lane - Cowage Wood is a solid morning or afternoon option when you want to get out from the campsite without driving far. It won't blow your mind, but it does what it says on the tin.
