Countess of Chester Country Park

The Countess of Chester Country Park sits just outside Chester, a proper breath of fresh air if you're staying at one of the caravan parks dotted around the area like Fir Trees or Oakwood Farm. It's a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction - open countryside with woodland walks, grassland, and the sort of paths that actually go somewhere instead of looping back on themselves.

You're looking at a few hours here minimum if you want to do it justice. The walks vary in length and difficulty, so families won't feel trapped into a five-mile slog, but there's enough terrain to keep proper walkers entertained. It's the kind of place where you notice things - wildlife, seasonal changes, the odd surprising view - rather than stand gawping at a single focal point.

Free to enter and no car park charges that I could find, which makes it excellent value. Spring and early summer are the obvious times, though autumn's quieter and the light's better for photography. Winter can get muddy, so bring decent boots.

If you're basing yourself at Chester Fairoaks or Netherwood, this is ideal for a half-day break from the city. Not flashy or Instagram-ready, but genuine countryside on your doorstep. Go if you want real walking, not if you need visitor facilities and a café.
