Cotton End Park Long Buckby

Cotton End Park sits just outside Long Buckby, a working nature reserve that appeals most to serious birdwatchers and anyone after a proper walk away from the crowds. The reserve consists of old gravel pits that have been left to rewild - shallow pools, reed beds, and scrubland that attract kingfishers, warblers, and the occasional rarer visitor if you're lucky with timing. It's free to access and there are walking trails that take between 45 minutes to two hours depending on which route you fancy. Early morning or dusk is when you'll see the most life, so plan accordingly. The main draw here is the peace. You won't find facilities or cafes, so bring a flask and decent binoculars. Families with young kids might find it a bit slow unless they're genuinely into spotting wildlife - it's not a playground, it's a working reserve where you need patience. The location works well if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby glamping spots like Steepleton Lodge or the alpaca farm at Hideaway Wood, both within five or six miles. Northampton itself is close enough for supplies and bigger attractions if you want to break up the nature reserve days. Worth the visit if you're a keen birder or walker, but less compelling if you're just after a casual family stroll with something to occupy the kids.
