NBKA Apiary

The NBKA Apiary sits just outside Northampton and is genuinely fascinating if you've got any interest in how bees actually work. It's run by local beekeepers who clearly know their stuff, and you get to see hives up close - proper working ones, not just displays behind glass.

What makes it worth a visit is that it's hands-on. You'll learn about bee behaviour, the seasons, why colonies collapse, all the stuff you don't get from a David Attenborough documentary. The beekeepers are patient with questions, even the obvious ones. Kids find it engaging without being talked down to, though very young children might struggle with the standing around and listening.

Bring layers. You'll be outside for at least an hour, sometimes longer if the bees are active and the staff are in the mood to chat (which they usually are). Spring through early autumn is best - winter's a bit thin on action since the hives are largely dormant.

It works well as part of a broader Northamptonshire trip rather than a destination in itself. The area's got decent walks, and Lakeview Glamping nearby makes for a comfortable base if you're planning several days around here. The apiary itself won't take up your whole day, but it's the kind of place that sticks with you - you'll find yourself noticing bees differently afterwards.
