Cotton College

Red brick buildings sprawl across what was once one of England's most influential Catholic seminaries, though today Cotton College stands largely empty and slightly forlorn. Founded in 1873, this former training ground for priests educated thousands of men destined for the clergy before closing in 2018 after 145 years of operation.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the Gothic Revival architecture and the sheer scale of the place - it's quite something to wander the grounds and imagine the bustling academic life that once filled these halls. The chapel, in particular, is a proper stunner with its soaring ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows.

Families might find it a bit too academic for younger children, though older kids studying religious history could get something out of it. The grounds are extensive enough for a decent walk, and you're just outside Stoke-on-Trent if you fancy exploring the Potteries afterwards.

Access can be tricky as the site's future remains uncertain - best to check locally before making the journey. It's well positioned for a holiday park stay though, with Alton's Star Camping site barely half a mile away and several other options like Rue Hill Campsite within easy reach. Worth combining with nearby Alton Towers for a more varied day out.
