Cottage Plantation

The woodland at Cottage Plantation, just outside York, is one of those places that creeps up on you. You won't find gift shops or visitor centres here - it's genuinely just forest. Mature trees, quiet paths, the occasional clearing where light floods through. Perfect for a proper walk if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Fox Hill or Acorn Glade Glamping.

History types will find something to chew on. This isn't ancient woodland - it's planted, which means someone had a vision here generations back. The structure shows it: rows of conifers mixed with broadleaves, the sort of forestry you can read like a book if you know what you're looking at. Walkers get good value from it. The terrain is manageable, not steep, and you can lose an hour here easily without trying.

Families with young kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes - it's forest, not a play park. Older children who like exploring will do better. The lack of facilities is actually honest: bring water, wear decent shoes, maybe pack a torch if you're going in winter when the light goes early.

Go midweek if you can. Weekends bring the York crowds. Spring's lovely when the undergrowth comes alive, though summer gets dense. Worth combining with a broader Yorkshire walk or as a break from staying at Flaxton Meadows or Wigwam Holidays Ball Hall Farm - they're all within spitting distance. No entrance fee that I'm aware of, and you don't need to book ahead. Just turn up.
