Coombe Hill

Standing at 317 metres above sea level, this modest hill north of Cheltenham delivers views that punch well above its weight. The short but steady climb to the summit takes you through pleasant woodland before opening onto grassland at the top, where the real reward awaits. On a clear day, you can see across the Severn Vale to the Forest of Dean and even catch glimpses of the Welsh hills beyond. It's proper countryside stuff without requiring serious hiking gear.

Families with older children will find this a manageable adventure - the paths are well-defined and it's only about a 30-minute walk to the top from the nearest parking spots. Dog walkers love it here too, though keep leads handy near the grazing areas. The summit itself isn't dramatic - more of a gentle dome than a proper peak - but that view more than makes up for any lack of rocky drama.

Being free to access and open all year makes it an easy addition to a Cotswolds break. Several holiday parks cluster around Tewkesbury and the surrounding area, with spots like Tewkesbury Abbey Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just a few miles away. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you want to linger at the top with a flask of tea.
