The Larches

The Larches is a proper woodland walk just outside Cheltenham, the sort of place that feels genuinely separate from the town despite being barely minutes away. It's a mixed forest - plenty of larch trees as the name suggests, but also beech and oak - with paths that wind through decent cover and the occasional clearing where you can actually see where you're going.

What you get here is straightforward: walking. No attractions, no tea rooms, no heritage plaques. Just trees, paths, and quiet. That's either exactly what you need or a complete waste of time depending on your tolerance for the unremarkable. For families with young kids, it's fine for an hour's poke about, though there's not much to hold their attention beyond "look, a squirrel". Proper walkers will find it decent enough for an easy ramble, but it's not going to blow your mind - more of a between-days filler than a destination in itself.

The forest sits well with a holiday around Croft Farm Water Park or Tewkesbury Abbey Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite if you're looking to break up a driving day or grab some air after a rainy afternoon in the tent. It's the kind of place that earns its keep as part of a bigger trip rather than standing alone. Free access, naturally. Allow an hour if you're just drifting, longer if you actually want to explore the full network of paths. Winter's probably best - fewer midges, better sightlines, less mud than you'd expect.
