Coomb Height

The walk up Coomb Height rewards you with proper fell-walking credentials without requiring a full day's commitment. Rising from the landscape between Wigton and Caldbeck, this modest Cumbrian peak offers the kind of views that make you understand why people move to the Lake District - sweeping across open moorland with surprisingly big sky for a hill that doesn't demand serious kit.

It's a straightforward ascent, the sort that works brilliantly for families who want a genuine hillside experience without the scrambling or exposure that puts younger walkers off. Expect around an hour up and an hour down on most routes, depending which approach you take. The fell itself is bracken and grass - no technical difficulty, just good honest walking. On a clear day the vistas stretch properly; on a grey day it's moody but rather nice.

Solid choice for couples or small groups staying at any of the nearby campsites - Carrock Glamping Pods and Kestrel Lodge Campsite are both within spitting distance, and it makes an excellent morning walk before heading to one of the bigger attractions in the area. Not the most dramatic summit in Cumbria by any stretch, but it's the kind of fell where you'll actually see other walkers and feel like you're part of something rather than alone in the wilderness.

Free to visit, naturally. Go when the weather's settled - there's no shelter once you're up there, and cloud descends quickly on these open fells.
