Howgill wood

Howgill Wood is a proper working forest just outside Wigton, where you can walk among mature trees and actually get a sense of what Cumbrian woodland feels like without the crowds you'd find elsewhere. It's not a manicured country estate - this is active forestry, so expect a mix of established conifers and deciduous trees at various stages of growth, with decent paths threading through. You're looking at a couple of hours maximum for a thorough walk, though you could easily do half an hour if you just fancy stretching your legs after a drive.

Historically types might find it less interesting than the archaeological sites dotted around the Lake District, but walkers and anyone after a bit of woodland peace will get genuine value here. The forest does what it says on the tin: it's quiet, it's green, and it won't cost you a fortune to visit. Bring decent boots though - it can be muddy, particularly in winter.

If you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks - Carrock Glamping Pods is just 1.7 miles away, or Forest Views if you prefer traditional caravans - Howgill Wood works well as a half-morning activity before heading into Wigton for lunch or moving on to bigger attractions. It's the sort of place you visit because you're in the area, rather than because you've driven specifically to see it. That said, if you're after an easy woodland walk without trekking to the Lake District proper, it absolutely does the job.
