Miller Moss Top

Miller Moss Top is a modest fell rising above the quiet countryside between Wigton and the Lake District proper. It's not dramatic, and the summit won't take your breath away - but that's rather the point. This is proper walking terrain for people who enjoy the process more than the prize, where the views stretch across rolling moorland without the crowds you'd find on the bigger peaks.

The walk itself is straightforward. You're looking at gentle gradient through open fell, the kind of route that families with older children can manage without complaint and walkers who just want to get some air in their lungs will find satisfying. The top sits at just over 400 metres, so it's accessible even if you're not carrying full fell-walking kit, though the weather can turn quickly up here so you'll want proper boots and a waterproof all the same.

Allow a couple of hours for the round trip if you're taking your time and aren't rushing the views. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the summit - you'll need to bring water and snacks. Go early or midweek if you can, especially in summer, though honestly the fell rarely gets rammed.

If you're camping at one of the nearby sites - Caldbeck Camping or Kestrel Lodge are your closest options - Miller Moss Top works perfectly as a morning outing before you head deeper into the Lake District for the afternoon.
