Coneyburrow Wood

A proper woodland walk that doesn't pretend to be anything grander than it is. Coneyburrow Wood sits just outside Battle in Sussex - the sort of place you stumble upon while exploring the area rather than plan a trip around.

It's a working forest with decent footpaths threading through mixed woodland. You'll find yourself among mature trees, the occasional clearing, and if you time it right, patches of bluebells in spring. Nothing jaw-dropping, but genuinely peaceful. The walk takes anything from 30 minutes to two hours depending on which trails you follow and how often you stop to listen to the birdsong.

This is walkers' territory, particularly those doing the longer loops around Battle and Hastings. History buffs might appreciate the location - you're in the thick of 1066 country here - though the wood itself is just wood. Kids won't be bored if they're the type who like running about and spotting wildlife, but there's no play equipment or facilities. Bring water.

Battle's close enough that you can combine Coneyburrow with a proper historical wander round the town between visits. Seven Acre Woods campsite is barely a mile away if you're staying put for a few days. The wider area - Coghurst Hall, Crowhurst Park - gives you options if you want base yourself for longer, though none of these parks are particularly close to each other.

Free to walk. No facilities that I could find. Honestly? It's a solid option for breaking up a Sussex holiday, but don't expect drama. Go for the solitude, not the spectacle.
