Commando Memorial

Three bronze commandos stand on a hillside above Fort William, looking out towards the mountains they trained in. The Commando Memorial is a sobering tribute to the men who passed through the commando training centre during World War Two - some didn't make it home. You'll find it tucked into the Highland landscape, about fifteen minutes' drive north of town, and it's free to visit any time.

What strikes you first is the silence. There's no visitor centre, no queue, just you and the figures cast in bronze, their faces turned towards Ben Nevis. The surrounding hills are spectacular - proper dramatic stuff - and on a clear day the views stretch for miles. Most people spend thirty to forty minutes here, reading the plaques and taking photographs. It's the kind of place that stays with you rather than entertains you.

This works best for anyone with an interest in World War Two history or military heritage. Families come too, though younger kids may not engage beyond "why are there giant statues here?" The walk from the car park is gentle and manageable. Come early morning or late afternoon if you want to avoid other visitors.

If you're based at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park - both within a couple of miles - this makes a sensible morning detour before tackling Ben Nevis itself or exploring Fort William proper. It's not a full-day attraction, but it's well worth the short drive. Bring a windproof jacket. The exposed hilltop catches every breeze.
