Combs Ditch

The earthwork that cuts across the heathland near Wareham isn't immediately obvious - you'll walk right past it the first time if you're not paying attention. Combs Ditch is a linear defensive structure, probably Iron Age, that runs for a fair stretch across the landscape. What you're actually looking at is a substantial bank and ditch system, the sort of thing that would have taken serious effort to construct and maintain.

It's genuinely interesting if you're into archaeology or landscape history, but let's be honest - it won't hold children's attention for long unless they're the sort who get excited about earthworks. The appeal lies in understanding how ancient communities organised their land, not in dramatic ruins or visitor facilities. There's no café, no interpretation board, no car park with disabled access. You need to know where you're going and be comfortable with a bit of rough walking.

Historians and walkers will find it worthwhile as part of a broader exploration of Dorset's prehistoric sites. The heathland itself is lovely - proper wild country. Wareham makes a sensible base, and you could easily combine this with rambles across the surrounding commons.

If you're staying at Wareham Forest Tourist Park or one of the other sites in the area, it's well within striking distance for a morning walk. But go in expecting to do some detective work yourself. The ditch won't reveal its secrets to casual visitors.
