Elderton Clump

A Bronze Age barrow sits quietly on high ground near Wareham, and there's something rather affecting about standing where people left their dead 4,000 years ago. Elderton Clump is modest - a grass-covered mound about 40 metres across - but the views across Dorset farmland are genuinely excellent, and the walk to reach it is proper countryside.

You won't find crowds here. The site is free and accessible year-round, though you'll need to navigate from the nearest town via footpaths - it's not signposted or fenced off. Allow 30 minutes to an hour including the walk and time to sit about and take it in. The real reward comes if you're interested in Bronze Age settlement patterns; archaeologists rate it, though casual visitors might spend 15 minutes and move on.

Historically-minded walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming unless they're already keen on archaeology. The surrounding landscape tells a bigger story - other barrows and earthworks dot the area if you know where to look.

If you're based at Wareham Forest Tourist Park or Longthorns Farm, this makes a nice morning walk that ties into exploring the wider Purbeck region. It's genuinely worth the detour if you're doing a broader circuit of Dorset's prehistoric sites, but don't make a special trip just for the mound itself. The journey through the farmland is often the better bit.
