Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre

You'll spend a solid half-day watching rescued primates doing what they do best - socialising, causing mild chaos, and reminding you why these animals don't belong in captivity. Monkey World, just outside Wareham, is an ape rescue centre rather than a traditional zoo, which changes the whole vibe. The focus is genuinely on rehabilitation and education, not entertainment for its own sake.

The site houses chimps, orangutans, gibbons, lemurs and various monkey species in large, naturalistic enclosures. Some arrived from circus backgrounds, others from the pet trade - the stories behind individual animals are often sobering. You'll walk around at your own pace, reading about each group's history. The interpreters know their stuff and will chat properly if you hang about.

Kids aged five and up tend to get the most from it. Younger ones lose interest after an hour, but older children who actually care about animals will stay engaged. Adults who like primate behaviour will be captivated. It's not a "tick it off" day out - more a thoughtful, sometimes uncomfortable look at how we've treated these creatures.

Allow two to three hours minimum. It's open year-round, but spring and early autumn are best for seeing the animals most active. Entry isn't free but prices are reasonable for what funds the rescue work.

Stay at Longthorns Farm or Primrose Fields if you want to be close by, or base yourself at Wareham Forest Tourist Park for a slightly larger site. The centre pairs well with walks around Wareham itself and the Purbeck coastline nearby.
