T.E. Lawrence's wartime hideaway sits tucked into the Dorset heathland just outside Wareham, and it's a proper glimpse into the mind of a man who couldn't quite manage the modern world. Clouds Hill is a tiny cottage - almost austere - where the British Army officer and writer retreated to escape public life after the First World War. You walk through rooms barely changed since his death in 1935: a spartan bedroom, a library crammed with books, a modest sitting room where he'd listen to music on one of the era's early gramophones.

The National Trust runs it now, and frankly, it's not for everyone. History buffs and anyone interested in the Lawrence legend will find it absorbing - there's genuine atmosphere in the smallness of it all, the sense that you're seeing how someone actually lived rather than a grand display. But expect no crowds or queues; this is intimate and quiet. Kids under twelve will likely find it dull unless they're already fascinated by early-20th-century military history.

Allow forty minutes to an hour. The cottage itself is tiny, and the grounds are minimal. It's free admission for National Trust members; non-members should check current fees before visiting. The heathland around here is pleasant for a walk, and Wareham itself - a proper medieval town just a few miles away - has shops and pubs worth a stop.
