Oak Hill

Standing at just 108 metres above sea level, this modest hill near Wareham won't challenge serious hikers but delivers surprisingly good views across the Purbeck countryside for such a gentle climb. The summit feels properly remote despite being so close to town, with rolling heathland stretching in all directions and the occasional glimpse of Poole Harbour on clear days.

Families with younger children will find the walk manageable - it's more of a pleasant amble than a proper hike. Dog walkers love it here too, as there's plenty of space to let them off the lead once you're away from any livestock. The heathland can get quite boggy after rain, so decent boots are worth wearing even for what seems like an easy stroll.

Timing matters more than you might expect. Early morning or late afternoon light really brings out the purple heather in summer, and you'll have the place largely to yourself. Midday visits can feel a bit flat, and the exposed summit gets properly windy in winter.

For those staying at Wareham Forest Tourist Park or any of the other sites dotted around the area, Oak Hill makes a decent leg-stretcher before heading to the coast. It's free to access and you can easily combine it with a trip into Wareham itself or a longer day exploring the Purbeck Hills further south.
