Comb Plantation

A proper woodland walk through coniferous forest just outside Keswick, Comb Plantation delivers straightforward forest rambling without the crowds you'll find on the main Lake District fells. It's a working forest rather than a manicured park - rows of spruce and pine with that particular smell of needle-covered earth underfoot, the kind of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than other people.

What you get is shelter from the weather (crucial in the Lakes), decent walking paths through the trees, and the kind of quiet that works well for families who want to burn off energy without navigating steep mountain terrain. The forest floor is soft enough that even young legs cope better here than on rocky upland paths. Allow a couple of hours if you're making a proper afternoon of it, though you can do shorter loops depending on the path network available.

It's free to wander, which makes it useful filler between more ambitious days exploring the Lakes proper. From any of the nearby campsites - Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club is closest at just over three miles away - this is a handy backup plan when rain threatens the higher ground. Whinfell Hall Farm and Castlerigg Hall are equally close by. Worth noting: it's not scenic in the traditional Lake District sense. No views of water or mountains, no Instagram moments. But that's actually fine if you want an undemanding woodland potter that doesn't require booking or planning ahead.
