Colofn Taliesin

A weathered stone column stands alone in the Conwy Valley countryside, marking the supposed burial place of Taliesin, the legendary Welsh bard. It's not much to look at - just a pillar with some carved lettering - but the history wrapped around it is properly fascinating. Taliesin was a 6th-century poet whose work still gets quoted in Welsh culture, and this monument has been marking his grave for centuries, though whether he actually ended up here is another matter entirely.

You won't need more than twenty minutes on site unless you're genuinely into medieval Welsh mythology. It's free to visit and sits just outside Llanrwst, making it an easy stop if you're touring the Conwy Valley. The real appeal is the walk to get there - the surrounding countryside is lovely, rolling and green, with proper views across the valley. On a clear day it's worth lingering for the landscape alone.

Families with older kids might appreciate the mythology angle, but younger ones will likely find it a bit underwhelming - it's essentially a stone column in a field. Walkers and history enthusiasts will get more from it, especially if they combine it with other local sites. If you're staying at Maenan Abbey Caravan Park or Erw Glas Glamping just down the road, it's a pleasant afternoon detour. Snowdonia Glamping Holidays is a bit further out but still within striking distance. Worth the trip if you're already in the area exploring North Wales, but don't go out of your way specially for the column itself - go for the walk and the valley views.
