Colley Hill

The walk up Colley Hill from Tadworth takes about twenty minutes, and on a clear day it's absolutely worth the leg work. You get proper views across the Weald from the top - roll after roll of green Surrey countryside stretching out below you. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but that's rather the point. This is gentle walking country, not Alpine theatre.

The hill itself is owned by the National Trust and stays open year-round, with no admission charge. It's the kind of place where locals bring dogs and families wander up for a Sunday afternoon, which means it never feels remotely crowded even in summer. The paths are straightforward enough for kids, though muddy patches can catch you out after rain.

Allow an hour if you're taking your time and actually stopping to look at the view rather than bagging it for Instagram. Walkers heading towards Merstham or exploring the broader Surrey Hills National Landscape will find this a natural stopping point - you can loop it easily into a longer circuit. The countryside around here is thoroughly mapped with bridleways and footpaths.

Tadworth itself is workmanlike rather than charming, but if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Surrey Hills Park or Betchworth Fort Park, Colley Hill gives you a proper walk without needing to drive anywhere. Go early on a weekend if you want solitude, or late afternoon when the light turns golden and the views get genuinely lovely.
