College Wood

College Wood sits just outside Wallingford, a proper working forest rather than a manicured country estate. You'll find yourself among old oaks and beeches, with paths that wind through dense canopy - the kind of place where the light comes filtered and green, not the wide-open parkland you get elsewhere in Oxfordshire.

It's best for walkers who actually want trees rather than vistas. There's no grand narrative here, no ruined abbey or managed viewpoint. Just woodland, which sounds simple until you're in it on a grey afternoon and realise how rare that is to find locally. The paths are decent enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might struggle with the muddy patches and lack of obvious "attractions."

You won't find visitor centres or facilities, so go prepared. The walk takes what you make of it - you could tick it off in 30 minutes or wander for two hours. Spring's decent for bluebells if you time it right, autumn brings the usual colour.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Rolling Fields, Ridgeway View, or Swiss Farm are all within cycling distance - College Wood works as a morning out before heading into Wallingford town itself. It's not spectacular. But if you've come to Oxfordshire for proper walking rather than tourist tick boxes, it delivers exactly what you need.
