Colemere

Water this still and reflective doesn't come along often. Colemere near Ellesmere is a proper glacial lake - one of only two in Shropshire - and you can tell the moment you arrive why it matters. The walk around the perimeter takes about an hour and a half at an easy pace, and it's the sort of circuit where every bend reveals something different: reedy margins where you'll spot moorhens, open stretches where the light plays across the surface, patches of woodland that genuinely cool things down on a warm day.

It's free to access and genuinely peaceful, which is rare this close to built-up areas. Walkers will love it, obviously, but it's also excellent for bird-watchers - bring binoculars and you might catch something interesting on the migration routes. Families with younger legs shouldn't be put off; the path is manageable for kids, though not pushchair-friendly everywhere, and there's a small car park right at the entrance.

If you're basing yourself at Abbey Green Farm or Lower Lacon - both within 4-6 miles - Colemere works perfectly as a morning or afternoon wander before settling back at the caravan. The lake itself rewards a slow visit rather than a quick dash. Go early if you can, when it's quieter. Late afternoon light is absolutely worth timing for, especially if you've got a decent camera.
