Cold Overton Park

The walk up to Cold Overton Park takes you through proper Rutland countryside - rolling fields and stone walls that look like they've been there for centuries. It's a modest peak by most standards, but from the top you get a genuine sense of the landscape spreading out in all directions, particularly nice towards Oakham and the valleys beyond.

This is one for walkers rather than casual visitors. There's no visitor infrastructure to speak of, no cafe or car park right at the base - you're coming here to move your legs and enjoy the views, not to sit about. The walk itself is straightforward enough, though it can get muddy underfoot depending on weather. Allow a good hour if you're making a proper day of it from Oakham, longer if you're exploring the surrounding footpaths.

Families with older kids will manage fine. Very young ones might find it a bit of a slog without much to hold their attention at the summit - there's no playground or attractions, just the view and open air. History buffs won't find anything ancient or notable here; this is purely about the landscape.

If you're based at Greendale Farm or Emily's Cut, Cold Overton Park makes an excellent half-day walk. It's accessible enough that you won't feel cheated by the effort, yet remote enough that you'll escape the weekend crowds. Go early on a clear day if you can - that's when the views actually justify the climb.
