Coetgae Du

The forest track winds through dense woodland just outside Crickhowell, and Coetgae Du feels properly remote despite being minutes from town. You're walking through native broadleaf - oak, ash, birch - with the kind of dappled light that makes afternoon walks feel like stepping into another world. The paths are well-maintained but atmospheric, the sort of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of your own footsteps echoing back.

It's brilliant for anyone who wants to stretch their legs without committing to a full fell walk. Families with primary-age kids will get a solid hour or two here, though teenagers might find it a bit tame. The real appeal is for walkers after something intimate and green rather than dramatic views. There's enough woodland variation to keep things interesting - clearings, stream crossings, the occasional bench if you fancy stopping.

Being free and unrestricted, you can rock up whenever suits you. Early morning is genuinely lovely if you can manage it. The forest feels quieter then, less chance of running into dog walkers. Allow ninety minutes minimum if you're exploring properly rather than just nipping through.

It pairs nicely with Cwmdu Campsite three and a half miles away - close enough for a morning wander before settling in elsewhere. Crickhowell itself is worth an afternoon, and the Brecon Beacons are on your doorstep if you want something with more dramatic backbone. But Coetgae Du works best as a gentle palate-cleanser, not the main event.
