Coed Tanybryn

Coed Tanybryn is a modest woodland reserve tucked away near Garndolbenmaen in South Wales, the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a morning around. It's a working nature reserve - nothing flashy, just trees, birdsong, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little of it exists these days.

The woodland itself is fairly standard Welsh forestry: mixed broadleaf and conifer, damp underfoot even days after rain, good for spotting woodland birds if you're patient. There are informal paths through the reserve, though don't expect waymarked trails or facilities. It's the real thing - rough around the edges, which is precisely why it works. Walkers after a proper ramble will get more from this than casual strollers; it rewards attention and a bit of time spent simply being still.

Family groups with young kids might find it a bit thin on entertainment after thirty minutes or so - there's no playground, no visitor centre, no interpretive boards. But if you've got teenagers or adults who actually like woods rather than just the idea of them, it's worth an hour's exploration.

Camping in the area is straightforward: Ty'n Llan sits barely a mile away, making it a logical morning walk from your pitch. The larger parks at Black Rock Sands (4.6 miles) and Haven Greenacres (5.1 miles) give you more facilities but less immediacy to the reserve. Best visited early morning when the light filters through properly and the woodland feels properly alive.
