Coed Phoenix Nature Reserve

The woodland at Coed Phoenix feels properly wild - steep-sided valley, river running through it, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a nature reserve run by the Wildlife Trust, and it's one of those spots that rewards a proper explore rather than a quick stroll. The Afon Teifi cuts through here, and the woodland either side is mixed deciduous - oak, birch, alder - with paths that wind up and down the valley sides.

This is a walker's reserve, full stop. If you're after a gentle loop and a ice cream afterwards, head into Tregaron instead. But if you've got decent boots and don't mind a proper climb, the valley sides give you real woodland scrambling. You'll see buzzards, maybe hear woodpeckers, and on a quiet morning you might spot roe deer. The bird watching is serious - great spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, redstarts depending on the season.

There's no visitor centre and it doesn't pretend to be anything fancy. Free to walk, as it should be. Allow a good two hours minimum if you're doing the full thing; an hour if you just want the river loop. The paths can get sodden after rain - this is Wales, so pack accordingly.
