Coed Gorphwysfa

The forest sits just south of Bangor, a proper working woodland rather than some manicured visitor attraction. Coed Gorphwysfa is the sort of place you stumble into half by accident - dense trees, mossy paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Wales in the first place.

Walking through here feels properly rewarding. The canopy is thick enough that even on drizzly days it stays relatively dry underfoot, and there's enough variety in the terrain to keep things interesting without being punishing. You'll find yourself among mature conifers and broadleaves, with the occasional clearings that break up the monotony. It's not a tourist hotspot, which is exactly its appeal - you won't be queuing or navigating crowds.

For families with older kids and keen walkers, this works well. Younger children might get restless without a clear destination or waymarked loop, though it depends on the child. There's no visitor centre, café, or facilities to speak of, so come prepared. Allow at least an hour, maybe two if you're in no rush and fancy a proper explore.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Mornest, Kingsbridge, or Wonderfully Wild are all within 5-6 miles - this makes a solid morning or afternoon outing when the weather's cooperative. It won't be the dramatic highlight of a North Wales trip, but it's genuine, peaceful, and free to roam. That's worth something.
