Coed-Detton

The walk up Coed-Detton rewards you with proper views across the Powys borderlands, especially on a clear day when you can see right across to Shropshire. The terrain is pretty forgiving: woodland paths lead up through mixed trees before opening onto the summit. On the way you'll pass through sections that feel genuinely peaceful, away from the busier tourist routes that draw crowds further south. The views themselves aren't dramatic in the alpine sense, but they've got that gentle mid-Wales character - rolling fields, distant ridge lines, enough space to breathe.

It works well for families who want a walk that won't exhaust younger legs, or anyone based at the local holiday parks looking for something to do between lazy morning coffees and evening dinners. Most walkers allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on pace. There's no visitor infrastructure at the summit itself - no café, no facilities - so bring water and snacks if you're making an afternoon of it.

The nearest town is Presteigne, which sits about seven miles away and makes a good spot for supplies before heading out. Go on a weekday if you want solitude. Weekends can get busier, though nothing approaching the scrambles you'd find at more famous Welsh peaks. Worth the detour if you're in the area, especially for a gentle day.
