COED CADW WOODLAND

The woodland around Coed Cadw, just outside Llandeilo, is the sort of place you stumble upon by accident and then keep coming back to. It's proper forest walking - ancient broadleaf trees, dappled light filtering through the canopy, the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you booked time off work. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent elevation changes, so it's not a flat stroll, but nothing that'll destroy your knees either.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this. You're looking at anything from an hour's gentle ramble to a proper half-day hike depending on which trails you pick. The forest itself does the talking - no theme park attractions, no visitor centre gift shop, just trees and air and birdsong. Families with older kids who can handle muddy boots and uneven ground will find it genuinely rewarding. Younger toddlers might find the walk a bit relentless.

The whole area around Llandeilo works brilliantly for a woodland-based holiday. You've got Gelli Glamping and Ravenscroft Retreats Luxury Glamping within spitting distance, so you can wake up in a bell tent and be under the trees within minutes. Head For The Hills and Cosmos Camping are slightly further out but still reasonable if you're after something more rustic. It's free to access - no gates, no barriers - which is how woodland walking should be. Early mornings are best, especially if you want to avoid the school holiday crowds. Bring a proper waterproof.
