Beacons Way Art Trail Stone 8

The eighth stone along the Beacons Way Art Trail sits in the Carmarthenshire countryside, and it's one of those attractions that rewards the walk to find it rather than the destination itself. You'll need decent boots and a sense of direction - the trail markers aren't always obvious, especially after wet weather has done its work on the paths around Llandeilo.

This is sculpture rather than gallery in the traditional sense. The stone itself is an art installation, part of a larger trail that runs through the Black Mountains. Walking the full route is genuinely rewarding if you're fit and have four or five hours spare. Coming just for Stone 8 would be a bit daft unless you're already stomping between the others.

Families with younger kids might find the walk tedious without the payoff of multiple art pieces. It's much better suited to adult walkers and anyone interested in contemporary sculpture placed in landscape. There's something quite clever about encountering art out here rather than in a proper gallery space - it forces you to think differently about the work.

The whole trail is free. Closest towns for facilities are Llandeilo, which has decent cafés and pubs for refuelling afterwards. If you're camping at Llandyfan Camping or Gelli Glamping nearby, the trail makes a proper day out. Pack a packed lunch, wear good waterproofs, and give yourself longer than you think you'll need. The countryside here is genuinely lovely, and that matters more than the individual stones.
