Codber Hill

The walk up Codber Hill rewards you with proper fell views across Lancashire - nothing spectacular, but solid countryside if you're already in the Skipton area. It's a straightforward climb, the kind of thing you knock off in an afternoon without needing technical kit or a dawn start.

You get moorland underfoot, dry stone walls, and decent views back towards the Ribble Valley. On a clear day you can see further than you'd expect, though it's not one of those peaks that makes your jaw drop. The walk itself is the point - good legs and fresh air rather than a dramatic summit experience.

This suits families who want a proper walk but nothing too gnarly, and it's ideal for anyone staying at Thornton Hall Country Park or Holgates Ribble Valley and after a couple of hours out of the caravan. Walkers heading to the Lake District sometimes string it together with other local peaks, though you won't be rushing back. Allow two to three hours depending on pace and how long you linger at the top.

It's free to access, obviously - these hills belong to everyone. Go when the weather's settled because wet moorland is muddy moorland, and the views vanish in cloud pretty quickly up here. Winter's grim unless you fancy squelching through bog. Spring and autumn work best, when the wind's not trying to knock you over and visibility's decent enough to make the effort worthwhile. Worth doing once if you're in the area; probably not worth planning a trip around.
