Codale Head

The walk up Codale Head is straightforward enough - a proper fell rather than a technical scramble - and the views back down Great Langdale justify the leg work. You're looking at around two hours up from the valley floor, starting from near Ambleside, with the path climbing steadily through bracken and heather before breaking out onto the fell top itself.

What makes it worthwhile is the perspective. From up here, you can see the whole of Great Langdale spread below you, and on a clear day the views stretch across to the Coniston fells and beyond. It's the kind of walk that rewards families who don't mind a steady uphill slog - nothing steep enough to be genuinely difficult, but enough to feel like an actual achievement when you reach the top. Expect to spend three to four hours including breaks and a proper look around.

The nearby campsite options make this a natural fit into a wider Lake District trip. Great Langdale Campsite sits just two miles away and is the closest option if you want to base yourself right in the valley. Lakeside Retreat Glamping, a few miles further out near Ambleside, offers a bit more comfort if you're not keen on roughing it entirely.

Go when the weather's settled - low cloud renders the top views pretty much pointless. Summer weekends can get busy with walkers, so an early start midweek is the smarter move. And be honest with yourself about your fitness: it's not a hard walk, but it is a long one, and there's nowhere to hide if you run out of steam halfway up.
