Cock Hill

The walk up Cock Hill rewards you with proper Dales views without requiring mountaineer fitness. It's a straightforward climb from the Skipton side - nothing dramatic, but enough elevation to feel like you've earned the panorama across to Pendle Hill and beyond. Most people allow two hours return, which gives you time to catch breath at the top and actually look about rather than just wheeze and leave.

This works best for walkers with reasonable legs - not young kids who'll find it tedious, not absolute beginners either. It's the sort of peak that appeals to folk who want a proper walk but don't fancy tackling something like Pen-y-Ghent the same afternoon. The terrain's straightforward enough that you won't need special kit, though decent boots matter when the ground's wet.

You'll want to start early if you're doing this as part of a longer day exploring the Dales. The summit sits exposed, so weather can change quickly - check forecasts before you head out. There's no fee for walking it, obviously.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Draughton Heights or Howgill Lodge are closest at under five miles out - Cock Hill makes a solid morning mission before heading down to Bolton Abbey Estate or exploring Skipton itself. It's not a full-day attraction, but it fits neatly into a park holiday where you want an active bit without overcommitting yourself.
