Coaley Peak Toposcope

The toposcope at Coaley Peak is one of those viewpoints that rewards you for making the effort to get there. It's a proper indicator disk - the kind that shows you exactly what you're looking at across the Severn Vale, with names and distances marked out like a geography lesson carved in stone. On a clear day, the views stretch across to the Welsh hills and down towards the Cotswolds, which makes the walk worthwhile even if you're not usually bothered with directional markers.

Getting there means a moderate walk from the nearby car park, and it's the sort of place that appeals most to walkers and countryside types rather than families after a quick photo stop. The actual toposcope itself takes five minutes to work through - you'll spend longer admiring the view than reading the thing. Go on a morning when the light's better and the air's clearer; late afternoon can leave you squinting at the Welsh side of things.

It's free, obviously, and worth combining with a broader walk across the Cotswold Edge if you're based at one of the caravan parks around Gloucester - Tudor Caravan Park or The Riverside are close enough for a morning trip. The toposcope isn't a destination in itself, but it's a proper highlight if you're already up on the ridge. Allow 45 minutes from the car park if you want to linger and actually use the thing rather than just glance at it.
