Co-Cathedral Church of St Joseph

St Joseph's stands on Wind Street in Swansea's city centre - a Victorian Catholic cathedral that catches you off guard if you're not expecting it. Built in 1897, it's all red sandstone and Gothic Revival details, which feels rather grand for a Welsh industrial city. Inside, the space opens up with proper height to the ceiling, stained glass that actually works, and that particular smell churches have - old wood, stone, and something indefinable that makes you stand still for a moment.

It's worth a wander if you're into Victorian architecture or religious buildings generally. The exterior is photogenic, particularly from the south side where the stonework shows its age in a way that adds character rather than detracting from it. Coming from any of the nearby parks - Swansea Marina is just over a mile away, or the Riverside cluster if you're staying further out - the cathedral is an easy pop into town.
