On a clear day the view across to Mull and beyond properly justifies the effort. Midges can be grim in high summer, so go early in the day or wait for a decent wind. Winter brings different challenges - the ground gets boggy and you'll want to pick your moment.

Oban makes an obvious base, sitting just down the road, and it works well as part of a longer walking trip. If you're staying at Sunnybrae Holiday Park or Argyll Kayaker Cove - both solid options for the area - this is a straightforward afternoon mission that doesn't require a full day's commitment. It's honest, no-nonsense hill walking without the commitment of something like Ben Cruachan. Worth the detour if you like proper views and don't mind a bit of graft to get them.
