Cnoc Reilereidhe

The walk up Cnoc Reilereidhe is a proper hill scramble rather than a leisurely stroll, and that's precisely why it works so well. You're looking at roughly 350 metres of climbing from the Kintyre Peninsula, with the reward being genuinely impressive views across to Arran and the wider seaboard - on a clear day you can clock the coastal sweep for miles.

It's not technically difficult, but it does demand actual effort. The path winds through rough moorland and you'll want decent boots rather than trainers. Most people allow 90 minutes for the round trip, though it depends entirely on your fitness level and how long you linger at the top. This is a walker's hill, not a casual family outing - teenagers who like hills will enjoy it, but younger kids might find the final push dull.

There's zero infrastructure up here. No café, no visitor centre, no barriers or interpretation boards. You get what Scottish hills should be: open moorland, weather you need to respect, and the sort of silence that makes cities feel mad.

Campbeltown itself is about 20 minutes away, useful for grabbing supplies or lunch before or after. If you're staying at Carradale Bay Holiday Park - just up the coast and brilliant for caravans - this sits nicely as a morning walk before you head to the beach or explore the wider Kintyre coast. The park's five-star rating suggests people know what they're doing there.

Worth doing once if you're in the area and the weather cooperates. Don't expect queues or crowds.
