Cnoc nan Gabhar

The drive up to Cnoc nan Gabhar from Campbeltown takes you through proper Argyll countryside - rolling hills, scrubby moorland, the works. Once you've found the small car park, it's a straightforward walk to what turns out to be a genuinely decent viewpoint across the Kintyre peninsula. On a clear day, the views south towards the Mull of Kintyre are excellent, and you can see across to Islay if you're lucky with the weather. The walk itself is nothing strenuous - maybe 20 minutes to the top - so families with older kids won't struggle. You're looking at a Gaelic name here (it means Goat Hill), which tells you something about the landscape's history, though there's not much interpretation on site.

It's the sort of place that rewards a visit if you're already in the area, rather than something to drive halfway across Scotland for. That said, if you're based at Carradale Bay Holiday Park just down the coast, you'd be daft not to pop up here on a decent afternoon. The light's best in late afternoon when it catches the water below. Allow an hour all told. There's no fee, no café, no facilities - just the view and the wind. That's either brilliant or a bit bleak depending on your mood. It works particularly well after a rainy morning when the clouds start breaking up and you get those dramatic shafts of light across the water. Bring a jacket regardless of what the forecast says.
