Cnoc na Sìthe

The walk up Cnoc na Sìthe, just outside Crieff, is one of those routes that rewards you properly without demanding mountaineering skills. It's a straightforward hill rather than a proper peak - around 700 metres - but the views across Perthshire from the top are genuinely worth the effort. The ascent takes roughly 90 minutes at a steady pace, following a clear path through moorland and woodland. On a clear day you can see right across to the Trossachs. The summit itself is unremarkable - a small cairn, grassy plateau - but the sense of space up there is brilliant.

This one suits families with older kids and regular walkers looking for something achievable without a full day's commitment. The path is well-maintained and never technical, though it can be muddy in wet weather so decent boots matter. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top, so bring water and something to eat if you want to linger. Local Crieff has cafes and shops for fuel before or after.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Twenty Shilling Wood, Comrie Holiday Park, or Comrie Croft are all within three miles - this makes a solid half-day outing. Combine it with a wander round Crieff itself or a visit to Loch Earn for a more rounded day. Best tackled in good visibility; misty days strip away the whole point. Free to access, of course.
