Cnoc Coille Bharr

The walk up Cnoc Coille Bharr isn't long, but it rewards effort with proper views across Kintyre and beyond. Starting from near Tarbert, you're looking at a straightforward climb through woodland that opens out onto moorland - the kind of Scottish hill that feels wild without requiring full mountaineering kit.

It's a decent outing for walkers who want something achievable in a couple of hours. The summit itself sits at a modest height, which means the wind can bite on exposed days, but also means the panorama unfolds without that stomach-lurching exposure some peaks demand. On a clear day you'll see across to Jura and Islay; on a grey one, you'll at least have the satisfaction of climbing something.

Families with older kids will manage it fine. Younger ones might find the initial woodland section tedious, and the moorland stretch doesn't have dramatic photo moments to keep them entertained - it's proper hill walking, not a theme park.

There's no visitor centre or facilities at the peak itself, so bring water and something to eat. Go in the morning if you can - afternoon mist rolls in quickly around here. The whole thing is free, obviously.

If you're staying at Muasdale Holiday Park just down the road, this makes a natural half-day walk. It slots nicely into a broader Kintyre exploration without dominating your schedule. The real appeal is the quiet - you won't fight crowds here.
