Cnoc a' Mhadaidh

The walk up Cnoc a' Mhadaidh rewards you with proper views across Kintyre's moorland and down toward the Mull of Kintyre itself. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a steady climb through open country - but that's exactly what makes it work for a half-day outing from Campbeltown.

The route is straightforward enough that families with decent legs won't struggle, though it's not a stroll. Allow two to three hours return depending on fitness. The paths are rough in places and the weather can turn quickly, so come prepared with waterproofs and decent footwear. On a clear day you'll spot the Scottish islands to the west and get a genuine sense of how isolated this corner of Argyll feels.

History buffs might find the isolation interesting - this is Mull of Kintyre country, where Paul McCartney wrote his song. Less romantic perhaps than the headland itself, but the hill gives you the geography that explains the place.

If you're based at Carradale Bay Holiday Park, it's a easy drive down to start the walk. The peak works well as a morning or afternoon job, leaving you time to explore Campbeltown's whisky distilleries or head back to the coast. Bit steep for what it is in places, and the views aren't dramatically different from lower down, so don't expect Arran. But it's a solid, no-nonsense hill walk that fits neatly into a Kintyre holiday.
