Clyde Law

The walk up Clyde Law is short, sharp, and proper rewarding - you're looking at roughly two hours there and back from Moffat. It's not a slog; the path climbs steadily through moorland with the Southern Uplands opening up around you, and on a clear day the views stretch across to the Nithsdale valleys and beyond. The summit itself sits at 570 metres, which means it feels like real fell walking without requiring a weekend's commitment.

What makes it worth the effort is the isolation. You won't fight crowds here like you would on some of the Lake District classics. The terrain is boggy in places - proper boggy - so decent boots matter, and after rain it can be squelchy underfoot. Spring and autumn are your best bets weatherwise, though it can turn grey and damp without warning in these parts.

This is a walker's hill rather than a family stroll. Young kids might find the moorland a bit featureless and dull, unless they're the type who enjoy rough ground and the chance to splash about. History types will get less out of it than those simply after a decent walk with views; there's no ruins or interesting archaeology up there, just the landscape itself.

If you're based at Howslack Farm or Riverside Holiday Park near Moffat, Clyde Law makes a natural half-day outing. Pair it with a wander around Moffat itself afterwards - the town's got decent cafés and a proper high street. The walk fits well into a broader exploration of the Southern Uplands if you're spending a week in Dumfries and Galloway.
