Clowbridge Reservoir

The water sits there, flat and grey most days, ringed by moorland that rolls back towards Rossendale. Clowbridge Reservoir isn't flashy - no cafes, no gift shops, no pretence. What you get instead is a proper walk around the perimeter, maybe forty minutes or so depending on your pace, with views across Lancashire that open up once you're halfway round.

It's the kind of place walkers actually use rather than Instagram types. The path is decent enough, though muddy patches after rain aren't uncommon. Birdwatchers do well here - you'll spot herons if you're quiet, and the water attracts winter waterfowl. Families with older kids (seven upwards) will manage it fine; younger ones might find the lack of playground action a bit thin.

Come on a clear day. That's the whole thing really. Low cloud and drizzle turn it into something you'd trudge through rather than enjoy. Winter offers a certain bleakness that some find appealing; autumn's better for colour if you're not bothered about a specific time.

It sits nicely if you're staying at Rossendale Holiday Cottages, just down the valley. Pair it with a proper walk on the higher moors around Dearden Wood way, and you've got a solid day out. Don't expect anything grand - expect space, fresh air, and the kind of quiet you don't find near towns.
