Clifford's Tower

Clifford's Tower is what's left of a 14th-century stronghold - four substantial stone walls arranged in a square, with enough height to give you decent views across the Dales once you've climbed the internal stairs. The tower itself is roofless now, which actually works in its favour. You're not shuffling through gloomy chambers; you're wandering through open air archaeology.

It's the sort of place that rewards a proper walk rather than a quick photo stop. History types will spend a good hour picking apart the stonework and imagining siege scenarios. Families with older children (under-10s might find it a bit abstract) can make a game of exploring the different chambers and spotting where repairs have been made over the centuries. The climb isn't steep, but the wind can be bracing up there.

The tower sits well within a broader Yorkshire Dales trip. Skipton itself is just a short drive away, and if you're camping at any of the surrounding sites - Bolton Abbey Estate, Wharfedale, or Wood Nook are all within five miles - you've got easy access without the bother of a full day out. Check opening hours locally before you go; it's worth the detour if you're already in the area, though not worth planning a dedicated trip around.
