Cliffe Woods and Park

The woodland trails at Cliffe Woods loop through proper old-growth forest on the outskirts of Sheffield - the kind of place where you actually feel like you've left the city behind, even though the urban sprawl is just beyond the tree line. It's a nature reserve first and foremost, so expect unmanicured paths, bird-watching opportunities, and the sort of quiet you don't get in managed parks.

Walkers will get the most from this spot. The reserve isn't huge, so you're looking at an hour or two depending on which trails you follow - not the sort of place to spend all day, but ideal for clearing your head before or after tackling Sheffield proper. Spring brings bluebells that actually merit the detour, and winter's bare branches mean you can actually see through the woodland instead of just staring at a wall of green.

It's free to access and there's no faffing about with opening times or admission fees. The paths can get muddy, particularly on the northern sections, so proper boots are wise. Families with older kids will manage fine; toddlers might find the uneven terrain frustrating.

If you're camped at Ingfield Farm or Broad Close Farm - both within four miles - this works perfectly as a half-day activity without needing to drive far. Pair it with a wander through Sheffield's Peak District outskirts or use it as a warm-up before heading further into the hills. It's not Instagram-worthy, but it's genuine woodland, and that's increasingly rare this close to a major city.
